Ripple News!

And the Winners Are....!

Erin Hope - Tuesday, March 09, 2010
**We have one winning flyer still out there…  Good luck to all!

They searched high and low, they refreshed their browser on the hour to see if we had posted a new clue, they stumbled on a curious card saying winner…  These are the folks that can de-code Ripple Riddles and their stories!

Without further adieu, here are the winners of our Flyer Search!

6 Month Ripple Membership and $20 Pure Gelato Certificate
Genevieve Daigle kicked off the winning streak.  Genevieve found us through Twitter and narrowed down the first location to her favorite Gelato Spot Pure Gelato.
Her sharp eye found the ticket that was at the end of the counter facing the street.

6 Month Ripple Membership and $50 MacEwen Certificate
Rob was hot on the Ripple trail with friends from work.  At first they worked together when they saw new clues, but eventually it turned competitive!  They finally agreed to work together to win two of the prizes and each keep one!  Rob has a road trip adventure planned with his winnings!

6 Month Ripple Membership and $50 Trailhead Certificate
Dave Killick discovered us through Facebook and was keen on finding the clues.  New to Ottawa, Dave made his way to Trailhead for the first time and decoded our cryptic yellow water vessel riddle.

6 Month Ripple Membership and $60 Dogz Certificate
Erin Johannson was next on the winning streak.  She is a Ripple member who was finally in the right spot at the right time!  She made some new furry friends on her way to the winning flyer.

6 Month Ripple Membership and Dinner for Two at The WORKS!
Justin Girard and Danielle Seaman were having a dinner at their favorite burger joint when Danielle noticed something on the ceiling… something that said WINNER!  Tall Justin retrieved it, but as Danielle found it, she took the flyer.  When she called in and told their story we gave them a 2 month membership so they could both win.

6 Month Ripple Membership and Theatre Tickets for Two at the GCTC
Lindy Sgarbossa heard about us through a friend just in time to find the winning flyer stuck to the stairs in the GCTC!  New to Ottawa, Lindy not only discovered the flyer, but the GCTC!

6 Month Ripple Membership and a Kunstadt Ski Boot Bag
Andrea Lower teamed up with co-workers to crack the code.  She had her eye on the backpack and won it the day after her birthday!  She plans to take her backpack on her trip to see the Olympics!

Congratulations and Welcome to Ripple Adventure!

Making Waves with Ripple Adventure

Kayaking this Spring?

Photo courtesy of Robbie's Photo Art on Flickr.

This year marked my first winter in Ottawa. I’d heard horror stories about the wet, bone-chilling cold and snow piled up above your head. Stay inside and hibernate, that was the advice I got. But four months is a long time to be cooped up, so in January, I signed up for the Intro to Winter Mix with Ripple Adventure.

Every Thursday, I go on a different winter adventure – downhill skiing at Camp Fortune, snowshoeing along the Ottawa River, cross-country skiing in Gatineau Park, speed skating on the Rideau Canal. As a newcomer to winter sports, which I traditionally avoid like the plague (chalk it up to laziness and an aversion to cold weather), it’s been an incredible experience and a great way to beat the winter blues by staying active. Plus, we get personal instruction from certified professionals, which greatly diminishes my fear of breaking bones and/or making a fool of myself.

Ripple Adventure is the brainchild of Erin Hope, an Ottawa resident who wanted to create a way for Ottawans, both newcomers and long-time residents, to take advantage of the incredible outdoor opportunities the city has to offer while also meeting like-minded individuals.

The winter programs have something for everyone, from novices who are finally ready to embrace the Canadian winter to experts looking to try a new sport, make new outdoor activity buddies or get some extra instruction. Besides the Intro to Winter Mix, Ripple also offers a Winter Mix for more experienced athletes, an All Day Winter Mix (which includes dog sledding), a Cardio Camp for those looking for a winter gym alternative and a Speed Camp. Participants can sign up for a program – two-and-a-half months of weekly activities, including lessons and equipment rentals – or elect to drop in. A list of weekly activities is posted on the Ripple Adventure website.

While the winter session is almost over, the spring session is set to begin and it looks pretty exciting. Canoeing, kayaking, dragon boat racing, road and mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding are among the activities on offer. I’m hoping to sign up for an Intro to Spring Mix. Hopefully, I’ll meet more cool people, and maybe even become outdoorsy in the process.

Check out what people have been saying at Apt. 613

  1. 1 David McClelland

Sounds pretty interesting. I’ll have to check it out.

  2. 2 Gus&Otto

This looks totally awesome. I just checked out the site, but the spring session info doesn’t seem to be posted quite yet (although it says registration starts Feb 10). As a current member, are you already able to register?

  3. 3 Marieke

It sounds awesome, what a shame that the winter one is just about finished. I wish I had found out about it earlier. I just moved to Ottawa in January and have been hoping for something like this. Definitely considering the spring one, but like Gus&Otto said, it’s not posted yet.

Olympics spurring interest in skiing, snowboarding, skating

Local ski instructor Erin Hope is hoping to get Ottawans involved in sports like long blade skating, skiing and snowboarding to whet their appetites for the 2010 Olympics.

With the 2010 Olympics coming up fast in Vancouver, opportunities abound for Ottawans to try some of the sports for themselves.

“Over the last few years, I really noticed that more people are trying to get out and get active,” said Erin Hope, a ski instructor at Camp Fortune. “And with the Olympics coming up, there’s a lot more interest. People want to try the sports that they’re going to be watching.”

Better understanding of a sport can also increase appreciation of the Olympic games, she said. “It gives a greater appreciation of what the athletes are actually accomplishing.”

Hope, 28, founded Ripple Adventure last December to allow adults to try new sports.

Sometimes, it can be difficult for adults to get into a new sport, she said.

“Adults have muscle strength and the coordination, but as they get older, they’re more apprehensive,” she said. “That’s often the biggest barrier.”

A group will learn long blade skating on the Rideau Canal Thursday.

Hope said growing interest in the sport could be attributed to Clara Hughes being announced Canada’s flag bearer. “I think it's a sport that is exciting and new to many,” she said. “Most people grew up skating as a child, but long blade skating, that's something new.”

Ottawa’s outdoors and its green space is “phenomenal,” Hope said. “We’re really lucky.”

Local instructors will also teach downhill skiing and snowboarding at Camp Fortune, snowshoeing along the Ottawa River and Mooney’s Bay, dog sledding at Kazabazua in Quebec and cross-country skiing in Gatineau Park and Britannia Park.
